JG Claassen leads fog delayed Barrett Amateur |

After two fog delays, totalling five
hours, JG Claassen managed to shoot the lowest round
of the 2009 Barrett Amateur tournament with a 7-under
par 64. During round one, Claassen shot a two over 73
using borrowed clubs, as his were still in transit from
being lost en route from his hometown of Johannesburg,
South Africa. Today, round two was delayed by fog and
rain from 8am until 11:30am, followed by another hour
and a half delay around 12:30pm.
Once play finally resumed, Claassen
started his round on the back nine, shooting a 3 under
32 (3 birdies, 6 pars). On front, he continued to be
on his game shooting five pars, 3 birdies and one bogie
for 4 under 32, for a tatal of 64, and a two day score
of 5-under 137.
In second place is defending champion, Dylan Frittelli
of South Africa, who just finished his freshman season
at the University of Texas, (NCAA Division I). He shot
his second consecutive round of 69 for a two day total
of 4-under 138. Also in second place is Australia’s
Jordan Sherratt who had an impressive second round of
67, also for a two day total of 138(71-67). A third
South African player, Leon Knoll sits in 4th place with
a two day total of 140 (69-71).
Luke Dempsey (Bedford, NS) and Chris
Welton (York, PEI) are tied for 5th place with identical
two day scores of one-under 141 (both 73-68). The top
New Brunswick player continues to be Ed Reevey who is
tied for 7th at even par 142 (71-71).
The wet conditions played to the golfers advantage as
many low scores were recorded once the sun came out
for the afternoon and early evening. Claassen had the
low round of 64; Knoll had 67, four players shot 3-under
68 and four shot 2-under 69’s.
The third round of play is scheduled for 8am Friday

The 72-hole Barrett Amateur Championship
is the highest ranked Canadian event on the World Amateur
Golf Rankings. The Barrett is also a counting event
for Golf Week’s Scratch Players World Amateur
Rankings.
