and Knoll Share Lead at Barrett Amateur |

Dylan Frittelli of Preotoria, South
Africa & Leon Knoll of Johannesburg, South Africa
both shot 69 in the first round of the Barrett Amateur
Championship at the Algonquin Golf Course on Wednesday.
Frittelli, a member of the Texas Longhorns NCAA Div
I golf team & defending champion of the Barrett
Amateur, ranked 45th in the Scratch Player’s World
Amateur Rankings, was even par through 9 holes. Frittelli
then made birdies at holes 11, 14, 15, 16 to finish
at -2 (69). Knoll, ranked 35th in the World Amateur
Golf Rankings (another amateur golf ranking system),
who travelled to Canada on Sunday, was unfortunate to
not receive his golf clubs when he landed at the Fredericton
Airport. The Algonquin Golf Course & Academy were
accommodating to provide Knoll with golf clubs to play
the practice round & the first round of competition.
Although Knoll used unfamiliar clubs, he still managed
to make 3 birdies on the front 9 (33). On the back nine,
Knoll made 1 bogey to finish the first round at -2 (69).
Russell Budd of Toronto, ON &
Daniel Beckman of Melbourne, Australia find themselves
tied in 3rd after rounds of 70. Beckman, currently ranked
35th in the Scratch Player’s World Amateur Rankings,
played the front 9 at -1 (35), followed by (35) E to
finish with a 70. Budd made 2 birdies on the front and
made the turn at -2. Followed by 2 bogeys & 1 birdie
on the back 9 for a -1 (70).
The top New Brunswicker in the field
is Ed Reevey of Rothesay, NB, with an even par 71. Four
other players also fired opening rounds of even par
71 on Wednesday. The players at 71 are Tim Yorke of
Kensington, PEI, Brian Churchill-Smith of Oakville,
ON, Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, ON, and Jordan Sherratt
of Morphett Vale, South Australia.
