Woodstock, N.B. – The International
contingent at the 2009 Barrett Amateur Championship
just got a whole lot stronger with the addition of two
top ranked Australian players in this year’s field.
Golf Australia National Team members Daniel Beckmann
and Jordan Sherratt will become the first Australians
to play in the Barrett Amateur as they tee up at the
Algonquin this year.
Jordan Sherratt, who hails from Morphett
Vale in South Australia, is currently the #2 ranked
played in Australia. Sherratt also finds himself ranked
95th in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR)
and 114th in the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings
(SPWAR). Sherratt is also a former South Australian
Junior and Amateur Champion.
Daniel Beckmann, from Melbourne, Australia,
is currently the 4th ranked player in Australia and
he is fresh off a runner-up finish at the Srixon Australia
Amateur. Beckman is currently ranked 32nd in the Scratch
Players World Amateur Rankings and he sits at 116th
in the WAGR.
“We are very pleased to welcome Jordan and Daniel
as the first two Australians ever to compete in the
Barrett Amateur Championship,” said Barrett Event
Chair John Townsend. “When you look at South African
and Australia, you are talking about two of the top
golf producing nations in the entire world. To have
started a relationship with both of these countries
that allows us to have their top players competing for
the Barrett championship each year is something we are
very excited about.”
Beckmann and Sherratt will join previously
confirmed South Africans Leon Knoll, JG Claassen and
Jake Redman in the Barrett field, a field that will
also include South African Dylan Frittelli, who is back
to defend his Barrett title. Knoll is currently the
number one ranked player in South Africa and he sits
at 58th in the SPWAR and 76th in the WAGR. Claassen
is ranked 87th in the WAGR and 125th in the SPWAR while
Redman sits at 107th in the SPWAR and 192nd in the WAGR.
Frittelli, who finished one stroke ahead of Canadian
David Markle to claim the 2008 Barrett Amateur, sits
in 44th in the SPWAR after a stellar freshman year at
the University of Texas.
As for champions in the field, 2008
Ontario Amateur and Canadian Mid-Amateur Champion Dave
Bunker will play again this year. Two-time Barrett Amateur
Champion (2006, 2007) Bill Seagris of Ontario is back
along with PEI Amateur Champion Anthony Warren and NB
Amateur Champion Mathieu Gingras. 2009 NB Mid-Amateur
Champion Ed Reevey is also in the field.
