Dylan Frittelli wins his first Barrett Amateur Championship |
Monday
August 4 2008 |
Dylan Frittelli of Cape Petoria,
South Africa, came out on top Monday in the final round
of the Barrett Amateur Championship. Frittelli shot
67 in the final round to go with his 68 in the first
round of play on Saturday. Unfortunately, Sunday’s
intended second round was cancelled due to the dangerous
weather conditions. This is Frittelli’s first
time in Canada and he will be a freshman at the University
of Texas this coming fall.
At only the age of 18, Frittelli is
ranked within the top 100 amateurs in the world according
to the World Amateur Golf Rankings and he won the Callaway
World Junior Championship in 2007. At only the age of
16, Frittelli qualified and played as an amateur to
play in the South African Open, a Professional European
Tour Event, making him the 2nd youngest player to ever
do so. Frittelli was -4 in his final round with birdies
on holes 6, 9, 13, 15 & 17, going 35 on the front
and 32 on his back nine.
In second position and only one shot
back of Frittelli was David Markle of Shelburne, Ontario
with his second round score of 68. Markle began his
round tied for second place and was able to clinch second
place with his strong performance on Monday. Markle
was even par on his front nine with 3 bogeys and 3 birdies,
but he was able to turn his game around with 4 birdies
and only one bogey on the back nine, which occurred
on the 18th hole. Markle currently attends Kent State
University and he is the highest ranked Canadian in
the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
In a 6-way tie for third place were
Texans, Kelly Kraft and John Peterson, whom finished
1 & 2 this year in the Texas State Amateur; Dave
Bunker of Woodbridge Ontario, who recently won the Ontario
Amateur Championship; Chris Welton and Anthony Warren,
both of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Jace
Walker of St. Thomas, Ontario. All of these 6 competitors
finished at a total of 3 under par, 139. Sean Hurley
of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia finished alone in 9th place
and Jacques Blaauw of South Africa rounds out the top
10.
Two-time defending champion Bill Seagris
finished in a Tie for 11th place at even par 142. Seagris
played the front nine in 3 under par 33, but he was
unable to complete the comeback, finishing with 37 on
the back.
With his victory, Frittelli earned an exemption into
the 2008 Canadian Amateur Championship, scheduled for
the Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alberta,
from August 10th-14th. Frittelli is, however, unable
to attend because he starts his freshman year at the
University of Texas and he will already have travelled
to school. The top 20 finishers have earned points on
the RCGA’s National Order of Merit, whereas the
top 25 competitors have earned an automatic exemption
into next year’s Barrett Amateur Championship.
The Barrett Amateur Championship is
the highest ranked Canadian event on the World Amateur
Golf Rankings. The Barrett is also a counting event
for Golf Week’s Scratch Players World Amateur
Rankings. |
